Iris Thinks "Elton John Is Cute"

Tonight in the car we were listening to Elton John (good old school Elton John) and Ansley kept telling us she just did not like his voice.  So we kept telling her about him and how he was a legend in music, and he would wear some wild clothes in his younger years.  That when Iris pipes up and says, "I think he's cute".  One of those funny moments and we all laughed.

Iris had her follow up hearing tests on this week and she will soon be wearing hearing aids.  They made molds of her ears and are making the units.  She has been talking about them but I am afraid she does not understand what it really means.

We are sad that she has to wear them but it will help her.  And of course she picked our her colors so she will be styling:  purple.

We Are Worn Out!

Today was a big day for the two little ones (and us two big ones).  The day started with Owen going in for a swallow test and then meeting with his doctor.  What happens next?  Well, August 2, he is scheduled for the Big Surgery.  They will open him up and try to repair the esophagus.  He will get stretched one more time before then.  Doctor said to expect a week in the hospital and nothing orally for at least one month.  Owen is going to be so mad!

We are excited and sad at the same time.  If the surgery will solve the problem and will help Owen we are good with it.  But we are sad that he has to go through such a major surgery for the second time in his short life.  Another positive is that the doctor feels Owen is now strong enough to handle the surgery.

Owen is getting so big and becoming his own little person.  His personality and manorisms are great.  Please pray for Owen's body to heal, that he handles the surgery, he understands we love him and will let him eat as soon as we can, and pray for the doctors.

Now, on to Iris.  Iris went in for a hearing test today, and failed.  She has failed a few hearing test previously but we just thought it was due to her age and lack of interest.  So we finally got around to scheduling a hearing test with a audiologist and ENT.  We are taking her to Children's Mercy tomorrow for further testing.  The doctor today indicated her hearing is below normal and with her vision impairment it is important to get her back up to normal hearing.  Hearing aids?  We hope not but will probably find out tomorrow.

It is hard to think about Iris having to deal with hearing aids and a vision impairment.  It does not seem fair that she would have to deal with a hearing problem after all she has been through.  Kids can be so cruel and we worry about her in school.  Hopefully tomorrow we find out she is ok and hears just fine.  We know she likes to ask a lot of questions and sometimes ignores us but we thought it was just Iris being Iris.

Please pray for Iris and her hearing?  This hit us like a load of bricks today when they started talking about hearing aids.

It seems so overwehlming right now with medical bills piling up and uncertain medical conditions forthe two little ones.  We will continue to pray for God's guidenace and peace as we know God has a plan and we are part of it.

Another Stretching Day for Owen

Once again Melissa and Owen left the house very early for a 6:00am hospital visit.  Owen will have his esophagus stretched.  Even though I know what the results will be I hope for Melissa to call with a miracle and say, "the hole is closed".  Pray.

Owen continues to thrive (other than the medical issues).  He looks very healthy and is finding his groove in the family.  We are working hard to get him to talk more as he likes to use his hands instead of talking.  Slowly he is starting to use more words.  It is hard to get a word in edge wise with Ansley and Iris.

He continues to do great eating regular food.  So far bananas are the only thing he can not eat.  We also are giving him more and more liquids and they do not seem to cause a problem.  Hopefully I am not jinxing him by writing this.

Melissa and the kids are working me hard about getting more kids in our family.  Last night at dinner Ansley told me she thinks we need a family of eight!  Melissa found two sets of twins that need a family and now the kids are ready for two more?????

Gotcha Day - Two Years Ago Today

Two years ago today Melissa and I saw Iris for the first time.  It was an incredible Gotcha Day and we have enjoyed every minute with her.  Iris has brought our family so much love and faith.  She has trusted us from the very first minute we saw her.  I can not imagine how empty our lives would seem if she had never joined us.

Tonight we celebrated by eating at China Star.  Melissa and I had planned on celebrating at a Mexican joint (because Iris loves chips & salsa) but Ansley talked Iris into a "fancy" Chinese buffet.  We all shared our favorite moments with Iris and she ate up the attention.

Iris - we love you so much and are so thankful that God placed you in our family.  God knew exactly what he was doing when he picked us to be your mommy and daddy.  You have taught us so much about love and parenting.  Your confidence, courage, and trust are amazing.  God has big plans for you and we are so blessed to be part of it.

Her eyes look so good!

No More Bananas!

Owen has been eating so good and we have not had any problems.  Until the bananas got him!  Over the weekend Owen was eating Cheerios and bananas.  He started choking on the bananas and spit them up.  I did not think much about as he had no problems with the Cheerios.  Chalked it up to nothing.

Last night after dinner he was still hungry so we gave him a banana (cut into little pieces).  After a few bites he started choking.  Only this time he was not getting it to come back up.  This went on for several minutes and we started getting nervous.  Melissa was getting ready to take him to the ER and then he launched the banana piece out on Melissa.

Tonight we were all enjoying chocolate cover bananas that Melissa had made. Poor little Owen did not get to enjoy them and had to settle for Fruit Medley.  He was mad!

Iris is still thriving post surgery on her eyes.  They look so good!

Also, Melissa is really pushing for a set of 5 year old twins that live somewhere in the Caribbean Islands!  This is the price we pay for reading the book, Kisses From Katie.  Awesome book and we recommend you read it.........  be prepared because you will want to adopt a lot of kids!
